Miss Terry is pretty much a self-taught spinner and weaver, learning from books, You Tube videos, and DVDs. But nothing beats a hands-on lesson from someone who has been doing it a long time. When we got into this area last week, we stopped in a couple of yarn stores to inquire about any classes they might have available that fit into our time frame.
As it turned out, none of their classes worked, but the nice folks at The Bazaar Girls in Port Townsend called one of their instructors to see if something could be worked. And as it turned out, it could.
So yesterday afternoon we drove back to Sequim so Terry could take a spinning lesson from Lauralee Deluca, who gives classes in the fiber arts at most of the shops in this area. Lauralee was impressed with how much Terry has taught herself and said that overall her technique was pretty good. She gave her a few tips on how to make things easier and they spent a couple of hours spinning and chatting away. When we left Terry, said she is even more excited about spinning than she was to start with.
While they were at that, I sat in the Explorer reading my Kindle. It was a chilly, breezy day and I had to put the windows up to keep warm. It may be late July, but here on the Olympic Peninsula, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be warm.
We left Lauralee’s place a little after 5 p.m. and drove by the Sequim Elks lodge to check it out. They have 20 back-in RV sites on grass with 30 amp electric and water. There were only a few RVs there, and if we were going to be in this area longer, we’d spend a few days there.
Our next stop was WalMart to stock up on some things we needed and then we went to Kiwi’s Fish & Chips, which a couple of blog readers have suggested. It wasn’t the cheapest fish and chips we’ve ever had, but there is no question that it was the best. Huge pieces of delicious cod, crisp hot fries, and we shared a cup of the best seafood chowder I’ve ever tasted. As the name implies, the owner, Bryan, is from New Zealand, and we had a nice time chatting with him and his wife Daisy as we ate. If you’re anywhere in this region, do yourself a favor and check out Kiwi’s. You’ll be glad you did.
Today is our last day at the Escapees Evergreen Co-op and I’m not sure what we’ll be doing. There are a couple of shops Terry wants to go back to and some yarn she’s been trying to talk herself out of buying, that I think she’s going to cave in and get. And who knows, I may even sneak in time for a nap!
