Dandy Detects: A Victorian San Francisco Story | Daily Free EBooks ...

I

n this short story it is the fall of 1879 and San Francisco swelters under a heat wave while Barbara Hewitt, a reserved school-teacher, uncovers a mystery with the help of her son’s dog, Dandy.

For those who have read Locke’s two full-length Victorian San Francisco mysteries, Maids of Misfortune and Uneasy Spirits, and her other short story, The Misses Moffet Mend A Marriage, this is a chance to learn more about Annie Fuller and the occupants of her O’Farrell Street boarding house. For those unfamiliar with Locke’s mysteries and the late nineteenth century world they portray, this is just a taste of things to come. Enjoy.

This short story pulled me in instantly and I enjoyed every moment. It only took 15 minutes to read so not much of a “mystery” develops, but I loved revisiting the world of M. Louisa Locke.

I am very fond of the new Victorian San Francisco series by M. Louisa Locke and will buy anything in the series. This short story is available only on the Kindle, but it has the same boarding house and characters as book one in the series. I find short stories very unsatisfying which is why I only gave this story four stars. Book one in the series I gave five stars.

I’ve read both of Ms Locke’s mysteries, and hungry for more, decided to download this charming story and I was not disappointed. Ms. Locke’s stories are great, whether long or short and this story only whetted my apetite for the next one.

I enjoyed reading this short story, I love a well written story, this one left me wanting more.I read her book “Maids of Misfortune”‘ and now I wait for “Uneasy Spirit”.

Dandy Detects: A Victorian San Francisco Story reminds me of “Rear Window.” Barbara Hewitt observes something going on in her neighbor’s house when she looks out her own back window during an extreme heat wave in San Francisco in 1879 and looks into the neighbor’s open lighted window and sees some unpleasantness going on. Barbara lives with her son, Jaimie, and their dog, Dandy, in a boarding house, and Dandy the dog is very good at detecting crimes or trouble. This time Dandy gets up and barks and growls. Barbara is a teacher during the daytime hours, and she is up at night grading papers and can’t sleep because of the heat.Although predictable, I still enjoyed this short story that is an introduction to the author’s new book, and some of the same characters are in that book. I really like the characters and the setting in San Francisco and love the dog, Dandy. He’s an excellent detective. This story was enough to convince me to buy M. Louise Locke’s novel Maids of Misfortune: A Victorian San Francisco Mystery. I’m looking forward to reading and reviewing the novel.

this short novella is an excellent introduction to a series. dandy, the dog,is the cutest detective that i have ever read about.

It was an interesting read but the author made it as a very short read. Why? The Boston Terrier’s personality fit in well with the Author’s work. No doubt the Author must have pets. It would take the Author’s instinct and knowledge of pets to initiate this short read. Thank you.

I really liked this little short story that goes hand-in-hand with the rest of the series. It gives a little backstory and more insight into the characters.Dandy is a HERO!!

I like the San Francisco setting for this short story. I also like the historical time period and the warm likable characters, including Dandy, the little Boston terrier. I am looking forward to reading the full length novels in this series also.

“A wonderful short story set in the turn of the century San Francisco. Has wonderful characters and plot. These characters are also in her first book of a series set during that time. I’m currently reading her book “Maids of Misfortune” in the series. I truly look forward to her next book.
