I will focus mainly on the programs that work well for bloggers. By signing up as an Amazon Associate, you are an independent Amazon Associate, not an employee, contracted employee or representative of Amazon.com.
Each program or type of product has its own Fixed Advertising Fee Rate, which is a commission return of between 4-8% on shipped items. Each item link that you create will have your Associate ID (AID) number attached to it, so that you get credit for any sales generated.
Text and Visual Links
These are what I use most frequently and you will notice I am using text links in this post. Link the name of a product that you are writing about using your AID link. You can link to one product, a product search results page, or even the Amazon.com main page.
Kindle for Associates
Kindle is Amazon’s eReader, and these days authors release new titles for Kindle at the same time their print versions come out, usually at a lower price. Kindle books save space, shipping time, and shipping cost. This program offers specialized links, banners, and widgets for bloggers which work very well.
They run additional special promotions during certain times of year where you can earn an extra percentage on Kindle Reader sales. At any given time there are 100+ free books available for Kindle, but there are limitations and guidelines on how these may be used, outlined here under item 4 on the Associates Program Advertising Fee Schedule.
Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trials
Using your AID while promoting the 30-Day Free Trial of Amazon Prime earns a flat rate per person who signs up, even if they don’t continue their membership beyond the trial time. I will go into the benefits of a Prime Membership in another post.
aStores
aStores are customized web stores that you create and build using products that you select and recommend. You can embed your aStore into your WordPress blog or link to it from your blog. You can style your aStore to reflect your website’s colors too. Instructions on How to Embed an Amazon aStore In a WordPress Site are at UploadWP.com.
Amazon Appstore
Amazon sells Android apps and you can use these fabulous little apps for business, education or fun. Why not share a few with your readers? They also offer a Free App of the Day which, with your AID attached, may bring you new sales.
Amazon Instant Video
This is one of my favorites, not just as an Affiliate but as a customer. We rent movies from Amazon all the time! Unlike Netflix, Blockbuster, or any other stores these days, you can rent new AND old movies from Amazon and stream them instantly. If I’m in the mood to see 7 Brides for 7 Brothers , (because I love old musicals and I LOVE that one), I just rent it from Amazon. Where else could I find it? You can’t forget to return the movies and won’t have to pay for extra rental days because they are removed from your account when they expire. Share movie titles and earn.
Amazon Search Box
This little widget is easy to add to a Text Widget on your WordPress site. It allows your readers to search Amazon right from your site. Any purchases made through the search box are credited to your Associate account. Below is a screenshot of the widget in my sidebar, actual size.
Gift Cards
You may advertise gift cards for readers to purchase through your Associates link for Amazon.com as well as many other retailers. Who doesn’t love gift cards?
My Book Table
You won’t find it listed on Amazon, but My Book Table is a plugin created for authors to easily sell their books on Amazon, but through their own websites. Later this month, I have a special guest writer coming from AuthorMedia who is eager to tell you all about it!
Other Programs
In addition to these areas, they also have MyHabit.com (fashion clothing), AmazonSupply (industrial and office supplies), AmazonLocal (local deals and coupons, similar to Groupon and others) which you may apply as an Associate to and earn fees on.
No matter what type of blogger or webmaster you are, chances are that Amazon has a way that will help you provide supplemental income (or at least supplemental coffee or school supplies) for your family.
Tomorrow, we will look at whether bloggers should even try to earn money from their sites, and how to do it without alienating your friends or your readers.
Which of these programs have you used, or which ones interest you?
