Starstepper The Apache Medicine Man

"In a small Indian village a young boy played with a tom-a-hawk. There was a sound of many hoof beats and his mother ran up to him. " Come, my son, pony soldiers are coming to kill us. You must hide." As the Indian warriors ran out to meet the attack, his mother hid the lad in the tepee under some blankets. "You must not come out until I say."

He lay under the blankets for many hours and heard the sound of gun fire and warriors whooping. Then the sounds died away. Yet his mother did not come back. Night fall, then day break. "It is so hot under these blankets. I will come out. He crawled from under the blankets and saw his mother dead on the tepee floor, a bullet through her heart. "Oh, mother, what has happened?' He walked outside and looked around. Everyone was dead. 'What will I do', he thought. He could not stand to see all his friends dead, so he started walking...."

Starstepper

Life in gangland Chicago in the days of Al Capone could be stressful, especially for a man like Starstepper, a quiet Apache medicine man who preferred an old run down hotel in the ghetto for a safe, warm bed at night. But how safe was it, really? And what could he do when things got hot? After all, everyone has problems, right?

When the Big Boss, lord of the neighborhood, with his head problems and his hot nurse, gave Starstepper a problem he found he had given himself one in the offing, a severe one, many times over. How could he fix his reputation now? It was an awful problem for a ghetto lord to have to live with, and, for that reason, he was determined to destroy Starstepper one day, somehow, come h*ll or high water, by hook or by crook. But Starstepper never cooperated. And he never seemed to worry. If at first you don't succeed, well we all know how that one goes...

Starstepper The Big Boss And The Magic Coat

A scientist who has a secret company called Dr. Zoobar's Underworld Technologies contacted the big boss, as they call him in the streets, because word travels fast when the dominate thug is shown up publicly. Starstepper made him look pretty silly in defense of Old Lady Smith who owns the run down hotel that Starstepper lives in rent free in exchange for security services for her. Starstepper is not rich in money but he is rich in the knowledge that only Apache medicine men can have. He doesn't need much cash to live well.

"Well, Dr. Zoobar," explained the Big Boss to the underworld scientist over lunch in his beautiful suburban mansion, "I want to rid myself of Starstepper because he makes me look bad and I must be respected on the street or every punk around will challenge me. It will take constant effort to answer and I don't have time. But Starstepper gives me the slip every time. I found out later he can't be killed, so how do I get him out of my life?"

"When you can't force a man to leave, you must make him want to leave by his own decision. You can't harm him but you can threaten to harm those he loves if he refuses to get off of your turf..."

"We tried every trick we know and he stopped us cold each time."

" You need a new trick, and I have one, if you can meet my price. Scientists have long theorized that an object could be rendered invisible if the light beams that normally bounce off them and back to the human eye could be bent around the object. That way they don't bounce and the object can't be seen. No one has found a way to do it but I have a coat that will make you partially invisible, on a clear day. On a dark rainy night , when there is less light to bend, it will make you virtually undetectable. Shoot one of your enemy's friends as an example to him and tell him more will die if he doesn't leave town. He won't be able to see you when you strike. The cost is one million dollars. Your reputation is worth it. "

"Well worth it. I'll take one."...

Starstepper Meets The Tattooed Time Traveler

Then there's the flamboyant tattooed time traveler, a young professor from the future, with his whirling, flashing, beeping time machine, his red headed personal secretary and his Irish Setter, who pops in and out of Starstepper's life, like it or not, due to the most peculiar of circumstances that somehow seem to happen all the "time." A profound man of the far distant future of great integrity and commitment to personal excellence, fiercely Irish, if any white man could be called Starstepper's friend, would it be him? Starstepper, always friendly and easy going, never said much about it directly, but one might infer from the works they did together.....

Starstepper And The Princess of the Flowered Forrest

Is Starstepper sweet on anyone? Circumstances did place him squarely into the life a young teenage girl who had the same knack with animals as he, and dreamed of becoming a great veterinarian one day.

Starstepper sensed the Great Spirit had called her to future greatness as a world class pet doctor because of her extreme affinity and love of animals and her heart felt desire to heal them for their distressed keepers who loved and needed them so much, and her natural capacity do so with a sure and sweet depth of kindliness.

He knew he could teach her things about the animals that are known not at all to the white eyes, and he did, but of course he would never harm one so young in any way.

As an Apache medicine man, he could talk with the animals, and turn into any kind of animal at will, and did so when necessary, and sometimes just for play, and she was happy to join him and do the same when it seemed the thing to do.

And he was an absolute expert in herbal medicine in a way that only Apache medicine men understood. In fact, he could live forever if he preferred, and had been around far longer than anyone in the neighborhood ever suspected. ..

Rich and many are the adventures and friendships of Starstepper, the Apache Medicine Man, a man profoundly devoted to the Great Spirit in all he lived, believed, knew and did. Come along with me on a strange journey to a place and time where things are simple and a man knows where he stands. But does he really?
