The recently launched Google Nexus 7 2013 model have got some edgy features, but Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD is nowhere less, if compared. The new Nexus 7 with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is a buzz creator.
The second-generation Nexus 7 (2013) has definitely managed to create some happy buzzes around with its upgraded features, slimmer and lighter look, better display and much sharper resolution than its predecessor the Nexus 7. Being in the league of the 7-inch display tablets, a comparison with other 7-inch rivals is drawn inevitably. Today, in this article, we will be measuring its weight against Amazon Kindle Fire HD, which was released hardly a year back.
DESIGN: Nexus 7 (2013) is 0.3 inches longer and 0.9 inches slimmer than Amazon Kindle Fire HD. It is also lighter than the latter, weighing 290g (LTE Model: 299g) against Amazon Kindle Fire HD’s 395g.
DISPLAY: One of the most conspicuous differences between the tablets is in their resolution. Amazon Kindle Fire HD flaunts 1280×800 resolutions with 216ppi. The second-generation Nexus 7, on the other hand, flaunts a formidable 1920×1200 display with 323ppi, making the texts way far sharper than that of its counterpart.
CAMERA: You may think that Amazon Kindle Fire HD is ahead in the race at least by whiskers when I tell you that it has a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera against the 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera of Nexus 7 (2013). However, Kindle Fire HD lags way behind when it comes to the rear camera. While Kindle Fire HD doesn’t have a rear camera, the second-generation Nexus 7 boasts of a whopping 5-megapixel rear shooter. The second-generation Nexus 7 camera shoots videos with 1080p resolution against the 720p video-quality of Kindle Fire HD.
PROCESSOR: Regarding the processor, Nexus 7 (2013) is the obvious winner with its quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz processor. Whereas, Amazon Kindle Fire HD uses the dual-core TI OMAP 4460 processor with a CPU speed of 1.2GHz.
SOFTWARE: There is a remarkable difference between the software of the two tablets. Kindle Fire HD runs Amazon’s custom operating system over a bottom film of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), without any of the Goggle features. Unless and until you totally remove Kindle and install a new operating system, it won’t run even a single Google app. Although Kindle’s Android is easier to use, it is only a proprietary version and supported only by Amazon. Absence of Google also means the Web browser is proprietary. Kindle Fire HD only supports Amazon’s own browser, Silk, but don’t expect it has the support level of Chrome and Firefox. Of course, you can download browsers like Dolphin and Opera, but not Chrome and Firefox. The second-generation Nexus 7, on the other hand, runs the latest version, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Naturally, it could run an array of apps including the ones built for the earlier versions of Android. It also runs all the Google apps which are restricted from Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD. What more, it features voice-control and sleek interface improvements.
STORAGE: Talking about the storage, Kindle Fire HD has an internal memory of 16GB/32GB with 1GB RAM; whereas Nexus 7 (2013) also has an internal memory of 16GB/32GB, but with 2GB RAM.
BATTERY: Both the tablets have similar battery lives. Kindle Fire HD (4,440 mAh) last for 7hours; whereas the second-generation Nexus 7 (3,950 mAh) manages to last 37minutes more than its counterpart.
PRICE: When it comes to the price, Amazon Kindle Fire HD looks more attractive. While a 16GB Kindle Fire HD model comes at $199, a 16GB model of Nexus 7 (2013) costs $299.
VERDICT: Overall, both are great tablets. But if you are looking for a more open system, hate being restricted from installing new apps, and can’t do without the Google apps, then Nexus 7 (2013) would be a better buy for you. Otherwise, for everything else, Amazon Kindle Fire HD won’t disappoint you either.
