Review: Abide with Me by Ian Ayris

This is a review of Abide With Me by Ian Ayris

WARNING – Strong Language.

This book contains very strong language – but don't let that put you off.

John Sissons comes from the East End. You meet him first as a young boy, in thrall to his father, and a massive supporter of West Ham. You will read in detail how his life was shaped by life in the poorer part of London, where 'the respectable poor' live their lives

He has a friend called Kenny, a dark and somehow mysterious figure, who pops up regularly in his life, but who no-one, not even 'Johnny', understands. Kenny lives with his violent, aggressive father, and his mother, who tries her best, but rarely succeeds.

Next we meet Johnny as a young tearaway, getting into trouble for the first time.

Soon he is in prison.

This is the story of his life among the 'faces' of the East End, struggling to stay legit. And not always succeeding.

A very entertaining read – I'll be happy to read more from this author.
