Here's a simple technique 4U to help increase the open rate of your emails which I got from Rob Bly a wee while ago ;)
After you've written your email and are pondering the subject line for your masterpiece, ask yourself the following 4 questions…
1. URGENCY: Does your subject line have a sense of urgency about it? 2. UNIQUENESS: Does your email have a sense of uniqueness about it? 3. USEFUL: Will the reader consider the content useful or helpful? 4. ULTRA-SPECIFIC: Does your subject line get to the relevant point fast?
Taking an email from my INBOX which was left unopened, lets find out why….
The email subject line was "Free Kindle EBook".
Now taking theEmail 4U Method above and analysing this inbound email….lets apply a maximum score of 25% to each of the Us to give a 100% reason to open the email.
1. "Free Kindle Ebook" had no sense of urgency - so score out of 25% - 0% 2. "Free Kindle Ebook" I dont know whats it about so not unique, score - 0% 3. "Free Kindle Ebook" I don't own a kindle, so its not useful to me, score - 0% 4. "Free Kindle Ebook" just isn't specific enough as to why id want to read it - score 0%
Now I'm not saying you're going to score 100% by ticking all the 4U boxes when you write your own emails, but I'm fairly confident you will increase your open rate if you apply the 4U rule when writing your subject lines, and if you use an autoresponder and mailing system like aweber.com you can test and monitor your response very easily.
Now I appreciate that email marketing is only a very small part of your marketing, but... What IS the next marketing goal or objective that you want to achieve?
;)
