Formatting for Kindle (Part 2) Contented? | Josh Stanton

When I brought Pulse out, I didn’t have a contents page. I didn’t see the point. When I read a book, I don’t worry about things like that, I just barrel right through the book. But, I think it looks professional, if somebody wants to show somebody something great, or not so great and can easily find it. So, I had to learn how to do it first. Here’s how. Using old Word.

insertbookmark

First thing you need to do, is make a chapter page. That means writing, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, right to the end. This is what the reader will see, so don’t skimp out on misspelling chapter that one time.

Next go to your real first chapter. Highlight it, go to insert at the top of Word, and hit Bookmark.

insertbookmark2

Little box pops up. So, you want to add ‘Chapter 1′. Keep it simple. You’ll need to find it later. Do this for your entire novel, making sure chapter 1 is chapter 1, and chapter 2 is chapter 2….

inserthyperlink

Back to the contents. In this screen grab, I’ve made all the links. That’s why there are all blue. Don’t worry about them being like that on the Kindle, they’re just links. So, go to insert hyperlinks. Click.

inserthyperlink2

Go to within document. Now you’ll find all your chapters you made. Simply correlate the right chapter to each one. Once finished, they’ll all be blue. I’d click each of them and make sure they’re correct in case of a slip of the finger.

And that’s about it. Not too tricky, and you got a contents. Any more tricks about formatting, drop a line here. Enjoy the rest of the sunshine!
