Kindle DX Relaunches June 7 Dubai Chronicle

Online retailer Amazon has made a surprising announcement. It will bring back its until-recently retired eReader Kindle DX . The device is now added back to Amazon’s Kindle Store on a thinner price of $299.

Kindle DX was first unveiled back in 2009. It was part of the company’s second-generation of eReaders along with Kindle 2 . The device has a 9.7” display with a resolution of 1200×824 pixels and it is a 16-grey level E Ink Pearl. The gadget comes with 3.3GB of storage capacity and its battery life can go up to one week with the wireless on. Also, unlike the latest Kindle generation, DX has a full physical keyboard.

Although the Kindle DX is not that outdated and has its advantages, it is considerably more oversized and heavy than Kindle 4, for instance. So why would Amazon bring it back to the market? Even though its price is now slashed from $489 to only $299, DX is still pricier than the newest Kindle eReaders.

Despite the fact that Amazon has not commented on that, there are a few possible explanations here. The first of them is the trend for mobile devices with big-screens. Consumers are not more interested in purchasing gadgets with large-sized displays and enjoy various media files on them. The reading experience with Kindle DX is still better when it comes to certain files and electronic newspapers.

Another reason why Amazon is digging out this eReader from its closet is that only in a few weeks the back-to-school shopping season will set into motion. DX and other Kindle eReaders are traditionally advertised as educational devices and they will probably lead Amazon’s back-to-school promotions and discounts.

The second big question is whether Kindle DX is here to stay. Amazon recently retired one of its best-selling products Kindle Keyboard and now its Kindle lineup is missing a keyboard device. DX can successfully fill that gap. Nevertheless, the growing popularity of tablet PCs is now outplacing eReaders from the market of mobile devices. Simply said, it is highly unlikely for Amazon to keep Kindle DX for too long.

Therefore, if you are interested in buying this classic piece of technology, you should do that now, while you still have the chance. Amazon will make Kindle DX available for purchase on its website starting tomorrow.
