The Kindle Chronicles - Kindle Screens in Sunlight A Comparison

Screens in SunlightYouTube viewer BobbyKempBigBand has asked how the Kindle Fire HD looks in sunlight as a reading device, so I did a comparison of it with the Paperwhite yesterday morning in bright Denver morning light. As you can see, the Fire reflects images much more than the Paperwhite. However, I was surprised to see that, depending on the angle I held it, the Fire’s display was actually sort of okay for reading. I think these LCD screens have been improved for sunlight reading since the first iPad was introduced three years ago today.

Here is a view of the two, arranged for a more flattering look at the Fire:

Screens better lookThe E Ink Kindles still hold a big edge for reading in sunlight, but I bet you could read fairly well with a Fire under an umbrella at the beach, if you got the angle of the screen right. In that setting, though, the simplicity and focus of the Paperwhite offer other advantages in addition to screen visibility. Friends don’t let friends tweet at the beach, right?
