Your new Amazon Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, or Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet isn’t just for reading books and watching movies. Amazon’s Appstore also has thousands of games, and it’s easy to while away the hours playing well-known titles on your inexpensive tablet. We played a slew of them to pick out the best.
A great Kindle Fire game is different from a great Android game, because Amazon’s world isn’t quite the same as Google’s. There’s a different app store involved, different cloud services and some relatively specific hardware requirements. So we tested these games on Kindle Fires—although many of the games in our 25 Best Android Games will also run on these top tablets.
The 10 Best Kindle Fire Games
Here are some of the rules we followed to come up with this list:
1. It must be available in Amazon’s Appstore. While it’s possible to sideload games onto a Kindle Fire from elsewhere, Amazon’s Appstore is by far the easiest option for Kindle Fire owners.
2. It shouldn’t have a giant supplementary download. Storage on Kindle Fire tablets can sometimes be a little pinched, so we’ll avoid games larger than 500MB (we’re looking at you, Bard’s Tale, with your 3.5GB download.)
3. It should run well on a range of hardware, as there are now four Kindle Fire models with three screen resolutions.
4. Ideally, it should use Amazon’s GameCircle cloud features, including achievements and WhisperSync for Games, which lets you sync game progress between different devices.
5. This is my list. So it has games I like, and doesn’t have games I don’t like. I don’t like Doodle Jump. I don’t like “free-to-play” games that demand in-app purchases to get anywhere. I don’t like anything that demands to post stuff on Facebook for me, and I’m not very social. Your mileage may vary. Add more games you like, and I don’t, in the comments. I won’t be offended.
