Review and Kindle sale price (45% off): The Respect Dare by Nina ...

December 28, 2012

I recently had the chance to read The Respect Dare, by Nina Roesner (Full title: The Respect Dare: 40 Days to a Deeper Connection with God and Your Husband.) This nonfiction book was released December 11, 2012 by Thomas Nelson.

About this book (from the back cover):

“A long and happy marriage.” It sounds like the end of a fairy tale—an illusion that modern times have exposed. And it is, if marriage depends on a constant stream of romantic emotion, or even on copious amounts of time or money. Thank the Lord, none of those are necessary. Two thousand years ago, Paul gave women the key to a successful marriage, and it can be summed up in two words: unconditional respect. It’s not popular. It doesn’t sound fair. It can be hard to imagine. But it works. Nina Roesner has led countless women through this practical and life-changing journey, and in The Respect Dare she offers you the hope that so many others have found. Day by day, true stories and thought-provoking questions will help you apply biblical wisdom to the most important relationship in your life.Give it forty days. Experience the intimacy God intended and discover what he can do in your heart and in your marriage when you choose to show respect his way.”

Final Verdict:

This book plays off the book The Love Dare, which is referenced in the movie Fireproof; The Love Dare and The Respect Dare both outline a series of steps individuals can take to strengthen their marriages. Yes, yes, if you’re a frequently sarcastic person you might find it all a bit kitschy, but really, in a world where 50% of marriages end in divorce, there’s a place for sincere books and movies like these. It’s gimmicky, yes, but in my opinion if you go into the process acknowledging and embracing the gimmick you can still find helpful truth. All of that applies to The Respect Dare, which references the notion outlined in Love and Respect (an excellent book!) that while women prioritize love, men prioritize respect, so these are tasks that wives can do to show more respect to their husbands. I read the Respect Dare challenges a few at a time, instead of one a day, and I found most of them to be applicable and helpful. A few seemed a little more abstract; I enjoyed the “task-oriented” challenges more. (For example, you are challenged not to disagree with your husband for 24 hours, which I did. I would like to think I don’t spend too many hours disagreeing with my husband, but it was fun to be more mindful of my words.) The book does reference the author’s Daughters of Sarah classes a bit too many times, which I found tiring, but that’s my main complaint. Coming from the perspective of someone with a healthy marriage that can always use maintenance, I found most (not all) of the challenges in this book to be fun, challenging, and helpful.

If you’d like to check out The Respect Dare it is currently on sale for $8.79 for the Kindle version right now, which is 45% off. (Regularly $15.99) If you prefer a hard copy it’s currently on sale for $10.87. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.
