Shane got me a Kindle Fire this year, and I'm in love with it so far. I've decided to keep my Kindle Touch to read books on at home, and I'll use my Kindle Fire for comics, manga, and other things, and will read books on it only when traveling. The Kindle Touch has E-ink, which is just nicer on the eyes when reading walls of text for extended periods. The Fire is amazing, though, and its color screen displays comics wonderfully. It's also a Tablet, so it has other uses.
I've read a few graphic novels in the past, but I have never really gotten into comics until now. I've always wanted to, because I have loved comic book characters in cartoons and movies. I like manga, and I knew I'd like comics, too. What kept me away is that many stories told in comics started back in the 1930s or before, and have hundreds and hundreds of issues. Take Batman for example. Trying to find the beginning and catch up would be a nightmare, and I didn't want to start in the middle of the story and try to figure out what's going on. Luckily, I discovered a few gems:
Ultimate Spider-Man - I read the first seven issues over the last couple of days, and I love this series so far! I'm purchasing Volume 2 tonight. It's basically a revamped Spider-Man series, starting Peter Parker's story from the beginning. I got to see how Peter became Spider-Man. I got to see how the Green Goblin was made. I got to see Peter's awkwardness with Mary Jane. It's amazing.
Ultimate X-Men - Same as above, but the X-Men! One of my employees told me Ultimate X-Men isn't as good as Ultimate Spider-Man, and said he didn't finish after getting halfway through because he didn't like it, but the critical reception and reviews I've seen so far have been great, and I have read the first couple issues and really like it. I'm going to continue reading. I love X-Men, and it's awesome to see them modernized and starting up.
Superman: Earth One - Superman re-imagined, starting at the beginning of his story. I bought but haven't started this one yet. I'm excited though. Only two volumes have been published so far, and the series is still going, so this one might be fun to get into. I am usually pretty late to things, so I haven't followed an ongoing series in quite a while.
Batman: Earth One - A re-imagining of the Batman mythos from the ground floor. I'm super excited about this one as well, but I haven't bought it yet. Only one book has released so far, and it was published in July of this year. I assume there will be more, but if not, it might be a good read anyway. I plan to check it out.
Alright, off to read more Spider-man!
