Reading A Kindle In The Dark: Information On Deciding On The Best Kindle Lights

Article by Clare Swindlehurst

If you like to read books at night time but your other half wants to sleep then you’re probably used to reading with the help of a reading light. Reading a Kindle in the dark needs the same kind of light.

Kindle: difficult to read in the dark?

Some people are surprised when they discover that a Kindle is difficult to read in the dark. But if you think about it then it makes perfect sense. The Kindle has been expertly designed so that the screen looks and feels basically like real ink on real paper. This isn’t a backlit screen like the one you would have on a laptop computer, this is e-ink technology. And the lack of a backlit screen means that just like a paperback book if you would like to read in the dark you’ll need to buy a Kindle light.

You might decide this is a disadvantage of the Kindle, but the lack of a backlit screen is essentially what makes this reading device so sought after. It would be very hard for you to give up your favourite paperback books if you suffered from eye strain every time you attempted to read. And those other eReaders with backlit screens can’t be read in direct sunlight, so they’re not too hot for using while away on holiday either.

With the Kindle you will soon believe you’re reading real ink on real paper, and reading in bright sunshine is as uncomplicated as enjoying a paperback. Now you understand why backlit screens are bad, and reading lights are acceptable let’s think about the best lights for reading a Kindle in the dark.

Clip on Kindle reading lights

The first kind of kindle light is a clip-on one. As the name implies these useful little lights just attach to the top of your Kindle. You don’t need to hold the light separately and the LED light is vivid enough for you to read the screen clearly without being so bright that you have to worry about waking your sleeping companion!

You could check out your local bookstore to determine if they have any cheap clip-on lights that are intended for use with paperbacks, or you can obtain a proper Kindle clip on light that may cost a little more but will have been actually designed for your Kindle.

Kindle light cases

An alternative option is to buy a case with a Kindle light already built in. The advantage of this option is that the Kindle light tucks away snugly inside the cover when you’re not using it.

Many of the lights use their own batteries but others are intended to draw the power from your Kindle. This means that as long as you have power in your Kindle there’s no need to worry about the light failing to work when you need to read your Kindle when it’s dark.
