How to Publish a Book on Kindle | Simplicity Marketing, Inc.

Amazon started out as a book seller. And at the time no one believed that it would survive. Today, you can buy just about anything on Amazon. Beyond that, you can publish and sell your books there too. As a business owner, if you have already written reports and eBooks, why not publish them on Amazon and make them available to a much wider audience?

Publishing a Book on Kindle Is Easy

The first thing to point out is that there are many ways to publish with Amazon. Create Space is their self-publishing option if you want to publish a print book. If you’re interested in publishing a digital book, an eBook, then KDP or Kindle Direct Publishing is the path to pursue. There is also KDP Select which gives Amazon an exclusive on your book for a limited period of time. You earn higher royalties and they do more to help you market your book.

Step #1 KDP or KDP Select

Read the major differences and decide which is right for you. If you plan on selling your book via other avenues like Smashwords, or independently on your website, then KDP is the right choice.

Step #2 Sign Up

Signing up with KDP is free. If you already have an Amazon account you can simply click on “Independently Publish With Us” at the bottom of the home page and follow the instructions to get started.

Step #3 Create and Format Your Book

If you already have a book ready to go, then all you need to do is reformat it to fit the Kindle requirements. If you don’t have a book yet, write it or have it written in Microsoft Word and save it as a .doc file. Avoid using bullets, headers, footers, and complicated fonts. They don’t translate well on a Kindle device. If you have images they’ll need to be in jpg format and centered on the page. There are pixel requirements that change as technology changes. Make sure your images meet the current requirements.

Once your book is saved as a .doc and you’ve proofed it and thoroughly checked for spelling and grammar, save it as a web page (filtered HTML). You can then use a tool like Mobipocket Creator to convert your HTML file into an eBook that meets Amazon’s requirements. Note: you can also outsource this task to an administrative contractor or hire a Kindle consultant to do the job for you.

Step #4 Get a Book Cover

Your cover is extremely important. It’s what people often see first and it can make or break the buying decision. Again, you can do this yourself or hire a pro. Refer to the current image requirements before you upload your cover image to make sure that they meet the required dimensions and pixels.

Step #5 Publish

Upload your book and book cover and preview. Make sure it looks the way you want it to. If it’s ready, click “Publish.” Your book will be reviewed and assigned a number. Unlike other publishers that assign or require you to have an ISBN, you don’t need one with Amazon. Assuming your book has been properly formatted, it’ll be approved and ready for purchase in less than 72 hours.

Now you can begin your marketing bonanza. Let everyone know you have books available on Amazon and enjoy the profits and perks of being a published author.
