Amazon unleashes 4G Kindle Fire on tablet market | Meerang


Amazon has unveiled a refresh of its Kindle tablet line, with five new models of the Android-based device.


Along with the new 4G LTE tablet Amazon also released four other Fire tablets. The new tablets range in price from $159 to $499. Amazon’s new tablets mark a major expansion for the Kindle brand.


“This year, we want to have the best tablet at any price,” said Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos.


The 4G LTE Kindle Fire HD comes at a price tag of $499. Amazon will package the connected tablet with a data plan priced at $49.95 a year in the US. The new plan offers Fire users 250MB of 4G LTE data a month, 200GB of cloud storage, and a $10 Amazon credit.


Amazon’s high priced tablet comes in the 8.9in display variety. The device will offer users a 32GB hard drive, Texas Instruments OMAP 4470 processor, a 1920×1200 display resolution, and Dolby Digital stereo speakers.


Along with the 4G model Amazon is offering an 8.9in HD model without a data plan for $299.


The company also unveiled both standard definition and HD 7in Kindles for $159 and $199 respectively. HD models start out with at 16GB of on board storage while the standard definition model comes with an 8GB hard drive.


“We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices,” Bezos continued.


The technology giant is also adding software features to Kindlem including expanded search capabilities and parental controls.


At the press conference Amazon also unveiled its new Kindle Paperwhite e-book reader. The new e-book reader offers users’ new back-lighting technology that Amazon says makes reading easier in direct sunlight.


The Paperwhite e-book readers come in at $179 for a 3G capable model and $119 for a non 3G version. Both versions will be available in the US on 1 October.


The 8.9in Kindle Fire models will be available on 20 November in the US. While the 7in models are expected to ship on the 14 September in the US. The company has yet to provide details on UK availability.
