The folks of minipcpro did a lovely comparison video between the original Kindle Fire and the new Amazon Kindle Fire HD, unveiled last week. With the holiday season coming soon it’s important to know what you’re going to empty your piggy bank for. So, the new tablet brings a HD display, a front camera and more storage, plus the same appealing price point of $199, just like the Nexus 7.
A quick look at the two 7 inch models reveals that the new tablet has a 1.2 GHz dual core OMAP 4460 CPU, while last year’s effort had a TI OMAP 4 CPU dual core at 1 GHz. Also, last year’s model had 512 MB of RAM, while the newcomer has… well an unspecified amount that may just be 1 GB this time. On the display side we’ve got a 7 inch HD LCD screen on the newcomer versus the old 7 inch IPS panel. The resolution is clearly up, going from 1024 x 600 on the OG Kindle Fire to nowadays’ 1280 x 800 pixels.
Also, while the initial Kindle Fire had 8 GB of storage, this newcomer has either 16 GB or 32 GB. It also brings a front HD camera as extra, a big bonus considering the original lacked that. The battery has also evolved, providing over 11 hours of reading, web browsing via WiFi, music listening and more, up from 8 hours of last year. We also get Stereo Bluetooth connectivity now, that lacked on the previous Kindle Fire and the size changes aren’t that big here.
The newer slate weighs 395 grams, compared to the 413 grams of the Kindle Fire original version and the waistline is now 10.3 mm compared to 12.4 mm last year. More details in the hands on video below:
